For her presentation at Liste 15, the Young Art Fair in Basel 2010, Elisa Platteau has invited four gallery artists:
PIETER VERMEERSCH’ site-specific work leans heavily on its institutional context. A painter by training & in philosophical outlook, Vermeersch is best known for his monumental, immersive color installations. The fundamentals of perception define the basics of his practice, and this interest concerns the imperceptible as much as the perceptible. Vermeersch’ signature ‘degradé’ style, the seamless blending of a wide array of colors, operates as a metaphor for the smooth infiltration of art into the scopic regime of contemporary spectacle, while simultaneously also interrogating the role of painting as ornament, backdrop even.
In comparison, the objects of EVA BERENDES and MICHAEL VAN DEN ABEELE acquire the soothing, reassuring aura of ‘real’, proper art – though they of course take great pleasure in sabotaging this very mirage: Vanden Abeele’s firm hand drags the viewer back into the vortex of a neo-noir sensibility that for some time has been recognized as the hallmark of Brussels’ particular cultural environment, while a spectral element of scenography also informs Berendes’ experiments in staging and framing.
Staging as such is the central concern of DANAI ANESIADOU’s work: operating in the expanded field of performance and ‘social sculpture’, Anesiadou enthusiastically taps from a wide variety of sources in the adjoining realms of popular culture and the canonical forms of high culture, producing an art of willed confusion that is best appreciated against the referential backdrop of avant-garde cinema.
